The name wasn't tweed from the beginning. The original was ''twill'', arsenic the fabric was being woven in a twilled. We name it differently only by chance. It's because of deceptive of merchandiser of Greater London , as the traditional narrative says. Almost two centuries ago the merchandiser got missive about the stuff 'tweel' being produced in Scotland but he misinterpreted the script apprehension it to be a trade-name taken from the name of the river Tweed. This name left till today.

How everything started? In 1846, Lady Dunmore, widow woman of the late Earl of Dunmore, had the Gilbert Murray plaid copied by Townsend Harris weavers in tweed. This proven so successful that Lady Dunmore devoted much clip and thought to selling the tweed to her friends and then to improving the procedure of production. This was the beginning of the Townsend Townsend Harris Tweed industry.

Harris Tweed must be made from 100 per cent pure virgin wool. Now the woolen can be imported from different states but all Harris tweed is manus woven by the weavers at their ain home, finished in the Outer Hebrides. Only dying is made in factories, usually the same 1 where the stuff for Scottish kilts and covers are being dyed too.
